History New Caledonia has the longest history of mining in the Pacific islands. Nickel was found in New Caledonia in 1864 by the engineer Jules Garnier. It was distributed in the ore layers which cover about one third of the area of the main island of New Caledonia. Although New Caledonia is a small island nation, they produce about 25% of the worlds nickel reserves. New Caledonia has rich mines, and in 2009, they produced over 100,000 metric tonnes of Nickel. This metal is the most essential resource on the island, for it provides thousands of jobs for the many unskilled workers that live there.
